The Scorpion Patrol's
"Communicator Project"

May, 1998
As one of our requirements for the Communicator Badge, we visited a local Radio Station to learn about broadcasting and careers in the communications field. We were graciously hosted by Flynn Communications at their radio station on the corner of Hickory Hill and Mt. Moriah in Memphis Tennessee.
Upon our arrival, Mr. Grady brought us into the MIXING STUDIO to demonstrate how advertisements and promotions are recorded and mixed with special effects and music.

The DEMONSTRATION was AWESOME!

Each of the scouts recorded "Hi! I'm .......[insert name]" and then as a group "and we're Cub Scout Pack 359, and this is KISS FM".

Of course, there were gaps and mistakes in the original recording, so Mr. Grady cranked-up the MASSIVE MIXING MACHINE, and showed us how he can delete mistakes and compress the recording time.

Then he overlaid music, and finally a special effect to produce the final copy.

Afterwards, we learned about the history of radio broadcasting in Memphis (did you know that Memphis had one of the 1st all female radio stations in the country?), how some of the equipment works, and how its transmitted throughout the area.

Finally, we got to visit a live studio. The DJ was Mr. Morningstar and he was GREAT! We got to sit in during part of his show, and he EVEN INTERVIEWED THE SCOUTS ON THE AIR! We talked about pinewood derbies, camping, and the schools that we attend.

Our recorded promo was aired several times during the week, and Mr. Grady even made copies for each of the scouts.

A Special Thanks from the Scouts and Akelas of Pack 270 to:

Mr. Grady
(after working all day at the station, he stayed until 9:00 PM serving as host and teacher to our scouts!)

and

Mr. Morningstar
(for his live, on-air interview with the Scorpion Patrol!)

both former Scouts and Great Akelas!
